Middle distillates

Home What we do Trading Middle distillates

85% of our onshore gas oil & jet is stored in Vitol-owned tanks
Middle distillates refers to a range of refined products situated between lighter fractions, such as LPG or gasoline, and heavier products such as fuel oil. Typically they include jet fuel, heating kerosene, and gas and diesel oils, such as marine bunker fuels. Diesel is mainly used for transportation. Heating kerosene is processed for commercial and domestic heating, whereas jet fuel is used to power the engines of commercial and military aircraft.

We have been physically involved in the global middle distillates markets for well over four decades; markets whose product grades are subject to global structural imbalances in supply and demand.

In this context, expert knowledge and the ability to manage and develop supply chains, with the inherent flexibility to respond promptly to changes in supply and demand balances, is critical.

In addition, precise and location-specific product quality specifications requires robust and specialist teams across each product grade with the expertise to ensure that the appropriate products are delivered efficiently in the quantity, quality and timing required.

In 2010 we launched Vitol Aviation – a subsidiary focused on the direct supply of aviation fuel both to the military and commercial airline industry in international airports such as London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Los Angeles and Kuala Lumpur. Vitol invested in Varo Energy to create a major new energy midstream group across North Western Europe. The company includes wholesale distribution, storage and refineries in Switzerland and Germany, has an annual throughput of 16 million cubic metres and a combined refining capacity of 168,000 barrels per day, adding to the strengths of Vitol and its middle distillates team.
