Vitol in the former Soviet Union

Active in the FSU since 1998, Arawak Energy is a multi-asset oil and gas production, development and exploration company with deep roots in the region and a proven ability to marshal local, national and international resources – quickly, efficiently, sensitively and safely. Arawak Energy currently has operations in Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.

The FSU states, with their pivotal location between West and East, are strategically placed to be prominent sources of growth in global oil supply in years to come. The region accounts for roughly 28% of the supply of crude oil outside of the OPEC producers and about 16% of total global supply. Russia and Kazakhstan are estimated to hold the seventh and ninth biggest proven reserves of crude oil at 70-80 billion barrels and 30-40 billion barrels, respectively.

Our 13 years’ experience in the FSU tells us that Arawak Energy is well positioned to leverage its regional knowledge and relationships in fully developing both existing assets and new opportunities. Our portfolio reflects a balanced approach with a spread of production, development, appraisal and exploration projects.

Our business has grown vigorously. Since 2005, we have acquired more than 2,000 km of 2D seismic data and 600 sq km of 3D data. Our drilling record shows 228 exploration, appraisal and development wells. This level of activity is reflected in our production, which grew from a little over two million boe in 2005 to five million boe in 2010.

Our strategy is to deliver sustained organic growth through exploration and to increase production from existing fields. We also look to deliver growth through the acquisition of carefully selected, complementary assets and the award of new contracts and licences.

To reduce communication distances and maximise strategic and operational control, our principal centres are in regional cities close to areas of existing operations. Where possible we employ indigenous staff, taking time and effort to train local talent across all parts of our business. Arawak Energy is committed to strict compliance with all local and regional laws and regulations and sees this as an essential measure for continued success in the FSU.

We also run a technical office in Calgary, Canada, where a team of geoscientists and engineers provides support to our field offices in Aktobe, Baku and Ukhta, and drives new business evaluation and development for the company.
