Innovative thinking – decisive action

The Galoc oil field was discovered in 1981 but remained undeveloped because of the complex geology, remote location and the relatively modest reserves potential.

But through the application of modern seismic processing, a Vitol geophysicist applied his North Sea experience to locate and map the turbidite fairways through pattern recognition.

This interpretation significantly reduced the sub-surface uncertainty and together with a phase development plan to further mitigate risk we decided to press ahead with development using two 1,600-metre horizontal wells. Production commenced in October 2008, only 23 months after project sanction, initially delivering around 18,000 bopd via a low-cost FPSO.
