Health, Safety & Environment

The advantage of being a relatively young company is that, from day one, we were able to ingrain our own brand of safety culture. VTTI’s HSE policy is based on instilling the concept of risk-based thinking. It is the job of us all to protect each other, our facilities and our environments by coupling HSE training with common sense, vigilance - and a willingness to speak up.

Texas City. Buncefield. Macondo. In our industry, these words no longer suggest names or places. Rather, they have become vivid shorthand for what can happen when things go wrong.

But while no one needs persuading that safe behaviour is paramount, everyone needs reminding. At VTTI, whether it’s through dedicated training, weekly toolbox meetings or full-scale drills, our employees and contractors know that:

  • Safety is the responsibility of each and every one of us, and that
  • VTTI practises sustainable entrepreneurship, respecting the environment and minimising our impact on it
  • Good safety behaviour is directly linked to our employees' performance and reward scheme

Putting HSE into our DNA

A single uniform HSE policy has now been implemented across every VTTI location.

So whether it’s a business we acquired, a brand new terminal or a project under construction, the same rules apply.

We are also:

  • launching a pro-active approach to risk control, and
  • introducing a compliance module which will help each terminal to track requirements relating to their facility’s licence to operate and changing local legalities.

Every installation has its own Safety Council, and their work is supported by a monthly safety call with every General Manager and all HSE Managers.

VTTI and the environment

Just a few examples of recent improvements in our environmental performance include:

Fresher air

Our Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Seaport Canaveral terminals have now adopted state of the art treatment systems for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Our facility in Ventspils, Latvia, is currently consulting with their municipality on doing the same.

Purer water

State of the art water treatment systems have been installed in our terminal at Ventspils and also Kaliningrad, Russia. At our greenfield installations, the focus is on preventing the contamination of storm water, to minimise the amount of wastewater that requires treatment.

Cleaner soil

At our older acquisition sites, contaminated soil comes - quite literally - as part of the territory. We have made a heavy investment in cleaning up the soils at our Amsterdam, Ventspils and Antwerp locations. Risks of pollution migration are now under control and contamination levels are decreasing.

Smarter energy

Our greenfield installations have adopted state-of- the art smart technology, ranging from light sensors that adjust the lighting level at night, to variable speed drives, interlocks and optimum operational control systems for our pumps that reduce pump power consumption. This knowledge is actively shared between our terminals, including our older sites.

† Total injury rate (TIR) = LTI + MTC + RWC (Lost time injury + Medical treatment case + Fatality restricted work case) as per 100,000 man hours worked.

†† Spill = Any loss of containment of product or waste related to a product transfer or cleaning operations which is reportable to the authorities. Any loss of containment of product or waste without environmental damage and not reportable to the authorities, but above 150kg.
