Carbon Emissions
Trading in the global energy arena demands a comprehensive understanding of carbon emissions, credits and the full environmental landscape brought about by growing concerns initiated by the Kyoto Protocol.
As a result, Vitol is an active participant in four interconnected credit mechanisms:
• EU Allowances (EUAs), giving the right to emit CO2 emissions derived from gas, coal or any other type of fossil fuel. Vitol trades in EUAs and assists companies with balancing their positions.
• Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs), credits earned by preventing CO2 emissions in the developing world and which are available to be traded.
• Joint Implementation credits (JIs), similar to CERs, but earned and traded in the developed world.
• Virtual Emissions Reductions (VERs), credits generated under the same rigorous controls as CERs, but sold into the voluntary emissions markets such as the USA.
Vitol has the skills and resources to work with clients in these complex areas. We are project developers and investors; we’re seasoned traders and are technologically experienced; and we’re a credible and respected counterparty in the global energy sector.
• CECIC Danjinghe 200MW wind farm from which Vitol has purchased CERs.
