Chemicals & Methanol
Chemicals
Vitol has been present in the chemicals sector for some time, and recent years have seen us intensify our activity.
For example, we made a significant addition to our portfolio at the close of 2006 with secured term supply from Trans-Pacific Petrochemical Indotama (TPPI).
Our business is focused on three main products:
• Paraxylene, a main feedstock for the manufacture of polyester
• Benzene, mainly used in the production of styrene and phenol
• Mixed Xylene, used for paraxylene extraction, or as an octane booster in gasoline
Our trading focus is within Asia, but with occasional arbitrage cargoes of benzene between Asia and the US.
Methanol
Vitol’s methanol business dates back to 1989 with origins in the Qafac unit in Qatar. Our methanol business has grown steadily through forging long-term relationships with suppliers and consumers in each of the key markets of Europe, China, India and the US.
We trade and market this highly versatile commodity whose derivatives are found in everything from adhesives and paints to polyester and gasoline.
We enjoy an excellent reputation for the reliability, flexibility, and competitiveness of our supply. Regardless of market conditions, our clients (whether major producers or end-users) see Vitol as a reliable partner with secure supplies.
Vitol is also embarking on an exciting expansion in supply through our joint venture with Oman.
• Through our extensive bulk-breaking and bulk-building facilities in Rotterdam we enjoy an excellent reputation for flexibility in the methanol market.
